Past Executive Officer: Ashley Wilson
After serving as the President of CUPE 3913 for the past two terms, I’m hoping to be acclaimed to the position of Past Executive Officer. I have enjoyed serving as the President of your Local for the past 2 years, advocating for members’ rights, representing members through grievance procedures, and bargaining for a strong Collective Agreement, and now I want to continue to support the Executive Committee in a new role. The Past Executive Officer position is a relatively new one, but the purpose is to ensure there is continuity between terms and to provide some institutional memory to the next Executive Committee. My experience will allow me to provide sound advice to the new Executive Committee over the next year and ensure a smooth a transition. I’ve had to act in many different capacities over the past two years to account for vacancies and have a solid understanding of all aspects of the Local and the requirements for each member of the Executive Committee and I want to be able to share that knowledge with the incoming officers of the Local.
International Teaching Assistant Caucus Chair: Igor Cunha
Hi fellow TAs, my name is Igor Cunha, I am an International Masters student from Brazil in my third semester in a Masters of Science in the Chemistry program at UoG. As an international student, the main issue that I faced besides adapting to a new culture and environment, was to acquire in a meaningful way all the information and opportunities around the University. Being in a situation where you need to deal with a new life, new program and new university can be very exciting, but most of the time, overwhelming. As a result, the sources and the way that information is delivered is crucial for international students. On this note, my main goal is to arrange opportunities for international TAs to acquire information about the Union, the University, and the city of Guelph. Keeping the information concise will avoid students feeling overwhelmed due to the huge number of things that are going on.
My strategy involves: (i) organizing specific meetings and get togethers for current and new International students because communication is the key; (ii) working with the International Student Organization (ISO) on campus to facilitate the introduction of the new students to the campus and their peers; (iii) online hang-outs before the beginning of the semester to help the students orient themselves with the UoG environment before their begin their activities at the university.
Why do I think I can make this happen? I have some previous experience managing people and organizations, as one of the founding members and President of the Junior Enterprise Company of the Department of Chemistry at my home university, Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG-Brazil). I was also responsible for starting the same project in Australia during my exchange experience in my undergrad at Curtin University. Therefore, dealing with people with different backgrounds/opinions and dealing with big projects are part of my previous experiences. Based upon this, I consider that I am a suitable choice for the position of Representative for the International Teaching Assistant (ITA) Caucus. I appreciate your attention and I hope that I can gain your vote.
